20 Spectacular Decorations for a Winter Wedding

If I had to pick a favorite season, it would undoubtedly be winter with its festive celebrations, whimsical design and enchanting holiday spirit. I adore the holidays and planning a wintry-inspired wedding is quickly becoming my newest obsession, so I put together some ideas to hopefully inspire other brides as well.

From oh-so-gorgeous ceremony aisles to bouquets filled with pine cones, welcome to your very own winter wonderland!

1. Welcome your wedding guests in style with this enchanting table. The candles and lighting add drama to this space:

2. Barns or other venues with vaulted ceilings are a romantic choice for a winter ceremony. This venue is particularly divine with its simple design and wintry vibe:

9. My newest style obsession is undoubtedly ghost chairs. They can be paired with rustic tables for an eclectic look or make a statement inside a glamorous ballroom.

If you’re planning a winter wedding and want to incorporate ghost chairs into your design, drape faux furs over a few of the chairs to create a cozy look:

10. For the perfect finishing touch, try adding a sprig of fir to the backs of your ceremony or reception chairs:

10 New Winter Wedding Ideas

Snowflakes and pinecones are tried-and-true winter wedding motifs, but don’t feel bound to these seasonal standbys. Here are 10 ways to reinvent your winter wedding.

Pinecone place cards

Wedding Colors

Reds and greens certainly reflect the season, but overdo this color combo, and your wedding may seem more holiday-oriented than you intended.

What’s Hot Now: Consider a less-is-more approach to your color palette: Silver and white with crystal accents can add some serious glamour to your winter wedding. For your ceremony, try a white velvet aisle runner trimmed with white satin ribbon, or decorate the altar with a crystal curtain backdrop adorned with hanging strands of elegant white phalaenopsis orchids. If you’re exchanging vows outdoors, get your guests in on creating the ambience by giving out clear umbrellas to friends and family members as they arrive.

The Flowers

Red roses, calla lilies, and amaryllis are decidedly winter wedding flowers, but if you step outside the flower box, and you’ll find a variety of options for winter blooms.

What’s Hot Now: Consider fuller flowers, such as white hydrangeas and soft ranunculuses. White boutonnieres can be handsome when they’re accented with greenery, but they also look great with a simple white ribbon. Add sparkle to your bouquet by wrapping the stems in ribbon embellished with crystals.

Invitations

Since winter weddings are usually held indoors (it’s an ideal time for ballroom receptions), they often call for a more formal invitations.

What’s Hot Now: A black-tie event is nicely conveyed by heavy cardstock and a navy blue, chocolate-brown, or even eggplant font with hand calligraphy. For a fresh way to achieve a formal tone for your winter wedding, use thick, frosted Plexiglas invitations in white scripted ink. Send the sturdy invites out to all your guests tucked into silver envelope liners.

Centerpieces

Go beyond glowing candles to add both warmth and romance to your reception site.

What’s Hot Now: If you want to heighten the drama, bring in the icy outdoors with ice-carved vases on your reception tables. Have your florist fill the vases with tall winter-white branches and hanging crystals to reflect the light from the tables. Surround the centerpieces with votive candles, and top your tables with white dupioni table linens and frosted glass china.

Escort Cards

Miniature sleighs and holly motifs stamped onto your escort cards would spell out the season pretty clearly, but they might not dazzle your guests.

What’s Hot Now: Leave everyone awestruck as they retrieve their escort cards by making the entire table sparkle. Have the cards hand-calligraphed in silver ink and attach them to individual crystals with a ribbon. Hang each from an oversized crystal candelabra centerpiece for a new take on the popular escort card tree.

The Music

A classical pianist playing during dinner is a sure way to create an elegant ambience, but consider a more unexpected accompaniment.

What’s Hot Now: For a twist on the tunes, consider hiring an a capella quartet to sing background music at your reception. Have the group sing your favorite jazz and pop songs to set a welcoming and festive tone for the evening. If you’re into a more classical sound, hire a cellist and ask that Vivaldi’s “Winter” be included in the repertoire.

Cocktail Hour

A winter cocktail hour calls for warm, comforting drinks. You really can’t go wrong with hot chocolate and warm apple cider, but it’s your wedding — why not take every opportunity (drinks included) to add an element of surprise?

What’s Hot Now: Serve up white hot chocolate in small espresso cups and eggnog in small punch glasses for your guests as they arrive. At the bar, offer saketinis (Japanese rice wine and sweet-flavored vodka) in glasses rimmed with sugar crystals.

The Cake

A wedding cake trimmed in red or green ribbon or topped with roses looks pretty, but bakers who are willing to push the fondant envelope can reflect the winter in totally creative ways.

What’s Hot Now: Play up the season with a white, vintage-style cake, dusted with edible silver powder. For accents, have your baker add a white sugar ribbon and crystal drops cascading down one side of the cake.

Favors

Food wedding favors are always a hit, but if cookies or truffles seem passe, try new treat ideas to send your guests home satisfied.

What’s Hot Now: Give out small packages of chocolate-covered cranberries or roasted chestnuts. An over-the-top idea that will undoubtedly impress: Have your caterer set up a hot chocolate and churros station to top off the evening.

Honeymoons

While many couples flee the blustery weather for warmer (and sandier) locales for their honeymoon, a winter wedding can segue perfectly into a snowy escape.

What’s Hot Now: Embrace the season and rent a cozy log cabin for a week in Lake Placid, or join the jet-setters at a luxurious hotel in Aspen for some serious skiing, wining, dining, and snuggling.

10 Things to Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping

10 Things to Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping

wedding-dress-shopping-blunders

Photo: Chloe Moore Photography

Shopping for a bridal gown can be an intimidating and stressful process. Don’t fret! That is what I am here for, and I hope you find these blog posts helpful. I have compiled 10 things to know before you go wedding dress shopping to help not only ease you into the process, but to give you insight before you dive right in. Enjoy!

You should limit your entourage

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t! Enlist one or two of your closest pals to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown of your dreams and not feel pressured by others’ opinions.

Hidden costs add up

Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Be sure to factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your final gown-shopping budget.

Undergarments are optional

Before you head into your appointment sans underwear and claim we said it was okay, read this: If you have a favorite strapless style or plan on wearing a particular body shaper, go ahead and bring it. You’ll ultimately need your gown-specific undergarments for your first fitting but not your initial appointment.

Salons take requests (really!)

Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, that doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been dying to try on. If you phone in advance and request a specific style, chances are that a salon staffer will able to call for a sample of that gown especially for you.

You shouldn’t get discouraged

There are hundreds of bridal designers out there with literally thousands of designs – which makes the odds of your finding a fantastic gown, well pretty darn good. We know that coming up empty handed on your first trip can be a letdown, but don’t give up. You will find “the one.”

Shop for the body you have now

No matter what your shape, knowing your body shape – pear, full, thin, petite – is the first step in finding the right dress. Even if you’re planning on dropping 15 pounds before your wedding, your frame isn’t going to completely change because you’ve swapped cookies for carrots.

Always book an appointment

While you may get lucky and snag a salesperson just by walking in, scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure that you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention.

It’s okay to pick favorites

To help guarantee that your gown shopping experience goes smoothly, ask a salon staffer when you call to book your appointment if she can suggest a favorite saleswoman. Or get recommendations from friends, and request a saleswoman by name.

Skip day one of any sample sale

We know you’re tempted to get there as soon as the doors open, but shopping on the first day of a sample sale can be downright messy. Do yourself a favor and call ahead to ask how many days the sale will run. Then go on one of the later dates.

Plan on playing hooky

Sneaking away from work will allow you to hit the stores while crowds are at a minimum. You’ll get more attention from the sales staff if you shop on a Tuesday morning rather than a Saturday afternoon. There will also be less people hogging the mirrors (hey, a little vanity is allowed)!

Wedding Dress 101 with Signature Bridal

Wedding gown shopping – oh, where to begin! For starters, as a bride, you should aim to look like the absolute best version of yourself on your wedding day. And aside from your beaming smile and bridal glow, your dress will be front and center. We all have different body types, which is why it’s so important to begin the wedding dress shopping process by understanding the different gown silhouettes — and for which body types they work best. Here’s a quick and easy guide to breakdown the various wedding gown silhouettes!

Ballgown: The “fairy tale” dress, with a fitted bodice, flairs at the waist with a full skirt. Ideal for most body types but looks great on pears, since it hides the lower body. Not good for petites; the skirt can be overwhelming on a small frame.

ballgown

Dress by Kenneth Winston

A-Line: Fitted bodice through the waist and flows out to the ground, resembling the outline of an uppercase “A.” Ideal for all body types.

holly
Dress by Ella Rosa

Modified A-Line: Fitted on the bodice and hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A” shape. The skirt of a modified A-line dress fits closer to the body than a traditional A-line. Ideal for all body types.

modified aline
Dress by Kenneth Winston

Trumpet: Fitted through the body and flairs mid-thigh. The cut is between a modified a-line and a mermaid cut. Ideal for frames with small waists, such as the hourglass, banana, and petites. Not good for pears and apples, as it accentuates stomach and hip area.

trumpet

Dress by Stella York

Mermaid: Fitted on the body from the chest to the knee, then flares out close to the knee. Ideal for slender frames and hourglass body types who are willing to show off their curves. Not good for apples and plus size body types.

mermaid

Dress by Kenneth Winston

Sheath: Narrow shape that flows straight down from the neckline to the hem. Ideal for lean frames, such as petites and bananas. Also good on hourglasses who are willing to show off their curves. Not good for pears; sheaths will accentuate extra inches and can be unflattering.

Tea-Length: Skirt falls in between the ankle and the knee. Ideal for all body types.

More ideas for wearable botanicals and wedding bouquets

The latest wedding trends in flowers are rustic rose, wildflower and herb arrangements that look like they just came from the backyard garden. Berries and foliage are predicted to be a top choice for the fall-winter wedding season. Here are some ideas to help you choose the perfect botanical floral arrangements and wearables for your wedding day:

  • Lilacs are the essence of aromatic romance, offering a spicy sweet smell.
  • The addition of scarlet pineapple sage offers a beautiful bright red hue and a fresh smell of ripe pineapple.
  • The combination of Spanish lavender and flowering oregano make for a perfectly fresh-picked feel.
  • Viburnum berries add lush texture to wedding flowers and wearables.
  • Pinecones are perfect for winter weddings. They’re rustic and affordable and look festive in hair crowns, bouquets, centerpieces, and more.
  • For a more modern look, consider white anemones.
  • For a simpler look, add chamomile and astrantia to your wedding flowers and wearables.
  • Peonies, seeded eucalyptus, and dusty miller make for a romantic arrangement.
  • For a garden affair, consider yellow mini calla lilies accented with mint and lily grass.
  • Get creative by adding kale, cabbage, artichokes and fruity berries to your arrangements.

23 Save the Date Ideas We Love!

October 21, 2015

Happy Wednesday SB Brides!

Today I have a fun blog post for you with 23 save the date ideas that we love! Sending out your save the dates is exciting because it’s your first chance to officially announce wedding info to guests! If you are like most brides, you may be wondering what the deal is with save the dates, and why do you need them since you will be sending out formal invitations down the road anyways? We encourage you to consider sending out save the dates once the date is set in stone, because they not only help you plan your guest list far in advance, but also bring more RSVPs.

Save the dates are usually sent out at least 6-9 months before the wedding date. This gets you in planning mode even earlier in the game. If you are expecting traveling guests, advanced notice means more of these guests can spare time to attend. Also, save the dates certainly share more than just the date. You’d be surprised how exciting it is to receive a save-the-date when you’re a guest. They get guests amped up for the big day!
